The Old Tree
Once upon a time there was a park full of trees, ducks, lakes and benches. In the center of the park there was this beautiful and very old tree. The tree was extremely tall and had very long branches. Some of the branches were so twisted they looked like crazy arms inviting the children to play with them.
The tree was tremendously wide and big, people used to say this was because of all the rain water he drank. He was 103 years old and was really tired. His branches were becoming fragile and the park rangers were afraid they would brake. The rangers built a fence around the old tree and posted a sign. The tree didn’t understand what the sign said, he didn’t know how to read, he only knew that the children were no longer playing with him and this made him very, very sad.
One day he overhead someone reading the sign out loud - Centennial Tree, Historical Monument. Please keep away. - He got scared. His branches will never hold children, and he will never again hear them laugh. He will die alone and sad.
The tree didn’t care about how centennial he was; as a matter of fact he didn’t even know what centennial meant, all he wanted was the children to play on him.
Days went by and he was getting tired of waiting for the children to come back. One spring afternoon, some kids jumped the fence and climbed onto one of his branches. They were there for a long time, talking and laughing, telling each other stories about what they would like to do.
The tree could not be any happier, he was listening very quiet; his leaves were waving with the sound of their laughter. An idea came to mind, he will do a little magic for them to come back and play with him every day.
Gus, the first boy to climb the tree, was telling his friends that he liked Carly but she won’t even look at him. The tree decided to dust him with some self-confidence powder, that will give Gus the courage to speak to Carly.
Next day after school, the children came back to the tree, Gus said he was very happy because he had the courage to speak to Carly and now they were friends. Gus credited the tree for his good fortune.
Again the tree was happy and making loud music with his leaves.
From that day on, more and more children gather around the tree in the afternoons, telling their little secrets to each others in the hope that the tree would hear and produce little miracles.
With each passing day the tree was getting stronger and happier; having the children around him had brought back the old spark to his bark
The fence had to be taken down, the sign removed. Centennial Tree has now become The Grandpa Tree.
How many of us have old Trees in our lives? In some cultures being old is a sign of wisdom. We need our elderly as much as they need us.
We all need attention; please don’t forget the old trees in your life.
